"Emerging Risks in feed and food supply chain" Action is urgently needed to rebuild public confidence in Europe’s food production system, and in the institutions and scientists responsible for ensuring its safety, after a series of recent ‘scares’. The Commission has established a new European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in the framework of the 2002 EU General Food Law. However, there is a growing need not just to monitor known risks, but to identify, assess and manage emerging ones.
A number of Member States have launched research programmes in this area, but lack the coordination and critical mass to tackle its complex problems effectively. PERIAPT begins the process of pan-European coordination which will be needed if scarce resourcesare to be deployed to maximum effect in an area of increasing economic and social importance.
